Electricity rates have increased in Chandigarh, effective from November 1.

Starting November 1st, electricity used in Chandigarh, from domestic to commercial, industrial, and other sectors, has become one percent more expensive. Domestic consumers have now been divided into three categories, with different rates set.

The slabs have also been increased from 2 to 5. The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) on Thursday announced new electricity rates for all Union Territories, including Chandigarh. For the current financial year, the JERC has approved a one percent increase in the existing rates. Although Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL) had demanded a 7.57 percent increase in the existing rates, the JERC has approved only a one percent increase.

The JERC has approved a 2% annual rate increase for the next five years. Following the JERC’s tariff hike, PDL will receive ₹1,075 crore in revenue in the form of bills starting in November, while spending ₹1,157 crore annually.
