A 42-year-old Indian-origin man, who was admitted to hospital after being injured when a police officer allegedly pressed his knee on his neck while trying to arrest him in Australia, has died, according to a media report released on Sunday. According to Seven News Australia, Gaurav Kundi, a resident of Modbury North in Adelaide, died on Thursday. Kundi was admitted to the hospital a few days ago for a brain injury.
The policeman had tried to arrest Kundi on Penham Road in Royston Park. The policeman had alleged that he had seen a ‘quarrel’ between Kundi and a woman. In a video related to the incident, the policeman can be seen forcefully assaulting Kundi while he and his wife Amritpal Kaur were screaming against the police action. Kundi was shouting, “I have not done anything wrong.” Kaur was making a video of the entire incident and saying that the police were acting in an inappropriate manner.
Kundi was admitted to the hospital after his condition deteriorated and he became “unconscious” during the arrest attempt. Police said Kundi tried to scuffle during the arrest and was in an inebriated condition. According to police, Kundi and his wife were allegedly arguing and a police patrol team passing by mistook the incident as domestic violence. Kaur said her husband was just inebriated and making noise but did not indulge in any violent activity.
Meanwhile, South Australian (SA) Police Commissioner Grant Stevens told ‘ABC Radio Adelaide’ that he would investigate the incident in addition to the investigation being conducted by the internal investigation section. During the investigation, police policies, methods, procedures, including training regarding responding to incidents, will be reviewed. Police said that no one was shot and no ‘Taser’ was found at the scene. ‘Taser’ is a type of gun-like electrical weapon, which is used by law enforcement agencies to give a strong electric shock to a person.
