Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan termed the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty as an extraordinary event and said on Monday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ended the historical injustice.

Speaking to farmers and farmers’ organizations here, Chauhan said that the ban on the Indus Water Treaty is in the interest of farmers. He said that this is a historic decision. He said that farmers will get water from the rivers of the Indus basin and will help in solving the water crisis in the region. This water will now be used for the benefit of our country and our farmers.
He said, “By cutting the belly of our country’s farmers, we are giving them water, which is responsible for creating terrorists.” He said that during the tenure of the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the Indus Water Treaty was signed and 80 percent of the water was given to Pakistan. Along with this, 83 crore rupees were also given, the current value of which is five thousand 500 crore rupees.
He said that at that time water experts opposed the Indus Water Treaty. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee also opposed this agreement in Parliament in 1960 and said that it should not have happened.
