US President Donald Trump claimed on Sunday that Ukraine and Russia are closer than ever to a historic peace deal. Hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at his Florida resort, Trump said he had a “great” two-and-a-half-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin and that he was confident Putin wanted to end the war.
However, Trump also acknowledged that the talks are quite complicated and that many key issues, such as the occupation of the Donbas region and security guarantees, are still unresolved. Due to which the talks could break down at any time. Zelensky thanked Trump for his efforts and said that Ukraine is ready for peace, But differing views on many issues with Russia persist.
The two leaders also spoke with European leaders and have expressed the possibility of meeting again at the White House in January. At the same time, Russia has made it clear that any complete ceasefire will require Kiev to make a bold decision on the Donbas region, While Trump has expressed hope that the situation will become clearer in the coming weeks.
