Shivank Avasthi, a 20-year-old Indian student studying at the University of Toronto Scarborough, was shot dead in a daylight incident near the campus on 23 December.

Police said they received an emergency call around 3:30 pm reporting a shooting near Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road.
Paramedics arrived at the scene and pronounced Avasthi dead due to a fatal gunshot wound. The shooter reportedly fled immediately after opening fire, and a manhunt is currently underway.
Avasthi was a third-year life sciences student at the University of Toronto Scarborough. His death has been recorded as the 41st homicide in Canada this year, raising renewed concerns about public safety in the area.
