Indian nurse Nimisha Priya got a new life, avoided death sentence, know how India’s efforts won her victory

Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, who is facing the death penalty in Yemen, has been given life support. His death sentence handed down by a Yemeni court has been completely overturned. This information has been given by the office of the Grand Mufti of India Kanthapuram AP Abubakar Musaliar. Although Musliar said that there is no written confirmation from the Yemeni government yet, it is certain that Nimisha’s sentence was earlier suspended and now it has been completely cancelled.

Who is Nimisha Priya?

Nimisha Priya originally hails from Palakkad district of Kerala and belongs to a Christian family. She went to Yemen in 2008 in search of a job. At the same time, he met Talal Abdo Mahdi, a Yemeni citizen, and together they started a clinic. After some time, there was a rift in the relationship of both of them and from here, difficulties started in Nimisha’s life.

She was sentenced to death for murder

According to information, Talal Abdo Mahdi started harassing Nimisha. He publicly declared himself to be Nimisha’s husband and illegally seized her passport so that she could not return to India. According to Yemeni officials, in 2017, Nimisha tried to knock Mahdi unconscious to get his passport back, but Mahdi died in the process. Yemeni police arrested Nimisha in this case. Nimisha was convicted by a Yemeni court in 2018 and sentenced to death in 2020.

In December 2024, Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi approved the execution, and in January 2025, Houthi rebel leader Mahdi al-Mashat confirmed it.

Abolition of international trials and punishments

In order to save Nimisha, many social organizations in Kerala and across the country had started strong efforts at the international level. The Government of India and various human rights organizations also contributed significantly in these efforts. Now it has been reported from the Grand Mufti’s office that Nimisha’s death sentence has been canceled after a high-level meeting in Yemen. This is a great relief news for his family and all those who are struggling to save him. The way of Nimisha’s return to India seems to be widening now.
