Gig workers associated with major online shopping and food delivery platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit, and Zepto have announced a nationwide strike starting December 31, 2025. Gig workers have previously been protesting their demands in several states since December 25. Workers say that while companies’ profits are steadily increasing, their working conditions and earnings are deteriorating day by day.

Who is leading the strike?
The strike is being organized under the banner of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union and the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers. According to the unions, a large number of gig workers from both metro cities and tier-2 cities will participate. This could significantly impact online delivery services across the country.
Major complaints from workers
Gig workers allege that app-based companies set payments, targets, and incentives through algorithms, but there is no transparency. All delivery risks are passed on to workers, while deadlines are strictly enforced. Frequently changing incentive rules have made their income unstable.
Dissatisfaction with pay and security
Unions say delivery workers are crucial to companies during weekends, holidays, and peak hours, yet they face long working hours, insecure deadlines, and declining earnings. Workers demand better pay, safer working conditions, and social security.
