A 4.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded in North Sumatra region of Indonesia on Wednesday morning. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake struck at 2:20 pm local time and had a depth of 10 kilometers. NCS reported that this is the second consecutive mild earthquake in North Sumatra in recent days. Earlier, a 4.5 magnitude shock was recorded on November 26.

In October, West Papua was hit by a 6.6-magnitude earthquake, whose epicenter was at a depth of 55 kilometers below sea level. Indonesia is often vulnerable to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis because it is located in the “Ring of Fire” region of the Pacific Ocean. 90% of the world’s earthquakes and two-thirds of active volcanoes are found in this region.
