73-year-old Harjeet Kaur, who has been living in America for three decades, was arrested by the ICE agency on September 8 and deported to India within a few days. She says that she was ill-treated during his arrest and detention, which caused both his health and mental condition to deteriorate.

How was the detention experience?
Harjeet Kaur was held at the Bakers Field Detention Center in California for 8 to 10 days. She said, “I was given only chips and cookies to eat, even after the operation of both knees, I was forced to sleep on the floor. I had to spend 60-70 hours without a bed. Many times I faced freezing cold and was deprived of food.” Meanwhile, she could not meet his family and friends.
Failed asylum attempt
Let us tell you that Harjeet Kaur applied for asylum in America with her two young children in 1991. But his application was rejected. Even after this, he appealed to the courts many times, but failed every time.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that 2,417 Indian citizens have been deported from the US since January 2025. He said,
“India is against illegal migration and encourages only legal migration. India is always ready to take back those whose Indian nationality is proved.”
