Punjabi youth dies under suspicious circumstances in Canada; family borrowed millions to send their only son home, now unable to even bring back the body.

A case of suspicious death of an Indian youth has come to light in Canada. Rajpreet Singh (24), the only son of a poor farmer family of village Gurm, which falls under Mahila Kalan Assembly constituency of Barnala district of Punjab, died in Canada. This news has sent a wave of mourning in the entire village and the family is in deep shock. The deceased’s father Kulwant Singh and mother Baljinder Kaur said that in the hope of a bright future for their son, they had taken a loan of about Rs 18 lakh and sent him to Canada on a study visa in April 2024. Rajpreet was studying in Brampton and was living in Surrey.

The family received word of Rajpreet’s death on January 17th via a phone call from a relative living in Canada. At present, no clear information has been released regarding the cause of his death. The deceased’s maternal uncle, Harjinder Singh (resident of Ghanaur), stated that the family owns only three acres of land. Rajpreet’s father, Kulwant Singh, was barely supporting the family by driving a private school bus. The family is already burdened with heavy debt and now they don’t even have the money to bring their son’s body back to India.

The victim’s family and villagers have appealed to Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer and constituency MLA Kulwant Singh Pandori to help bring Rajpreet Singh’s body back to India at government expense, so that the parents can perform the last rites of their only son in their village.
