Seven people were killed in a shooting on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa, on Saturday, police said. According to a statement from the Western Cape Provincial Commissioner’s office, “Police are investigating the shooting incident in Marikana, which claimed the lives of seven people, including one woman and six men aged between 30 and 50.”

The statement further said, “Three other men were injured in the attack.” The injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. According to the statement, the shooting occurred at approximately 10:15 a.m. Saturday, shortly after midnight.
Police said, “At this time, the incident is believed to be linked to extortion in the area.” “The suspects fled the scene and no arrests have been made yet.” Police issued a statement strongly condemning the attack. “The South African Police Service strongly condemns this violence and is committed to apprehending and bringing the perpetrators to justice,” the police said. Marikana is located in Philippi East, a large urban and semi-rural area in the Cape Flats region of Cape Town, which is plagued by gang-related violence.
