A case has come to light from Surat, Gujarat, which has shamed humanity. Here, a woman, fed up with her husband’s constant harassment and provocation, set herself on fire. The most horrifying and shocking thing was that when the woman was surrounded by flames, her husband kept making videos on his mobile instead of saving her.
The deceased has been identified as 31-year-old Pratima Devi. She was a resident of Chhapra district of Bihar and lived with her husband Ranjeet Dilip Shah in Jayraj Society of Ichchhapur area of Surat. Both had a love marriage and they have three young children. Ranjeet worked in a garage and used to fight and beat his wife every day over small matters.
A dispute erupted over a small matter, leading to death.
On January 4th, Ranjit became furious with the children for spilling wheat that had been drying on a neighbor’s roof. He threatened to prevent them from going to school. When Pratima took the children’s side, Ranjit assaulted her. Devastated by anger and humiliation, Pratima threatened to commit suicide, to which her husband provoked her, saying, “There’s oil in the house. Go burn yourself to death.”

Hurt by her husband’s words, Pratima doused herself with diesel fuel and set herself on fire. It is alleged that Ranjit made no attempt to save her, instead recording a video of his burning wife on his mobile phone. When Pratima suffered severe burns, he doused her with water and rushed her to the hospital. Pratima died on January 11th while undergoing treatment in critical condition.
Accused husband arrested, investigation underway
Surat Police have taken strict action in this sensational case. According to ACP Shweta Daniel, the Ichhapur police station has registered a case under sections 85 and 108 of the Indian Penal Code and arrested the accused husband, Ranjeet Dilip Shah. Police are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
