Violence against the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh continues unabated. The latest incident occurred in Narsingdi district, where unidentified assailants brutally murdered a Hindu grocery store owner. The incident has created an atmosphere of terror in the area.

He was returning home after closing his shop and was attacked on the way.
The deceased was identified as 40-year-old Moni Chakraborty, a resident of Sadhuchar Union in Shibpur Upazila. He had long run a grocery store in Charsindur Bazar in Palash Upazila. Around 11 p.m., Moni Chakraborty was returning home after closing his shop when unknown assailants, who were already lying in wait, suddenly attacked him with a sharp weapon. He was seriously injured in the attack.
Doctors declared him dead as soon as he reached the hospital
Locals immediately rushed him to the Palash Upazila Health Center, where doctors declared him dead. The incident has sparked widespread tension in the area.
Police are investigating, no arrests have been made so far.
Shahid Al Mamun, officer-in-charge of Palash police station, confirmed the murder and said that the police have launched an investigation. Security has been increased in the area, but no suspects have been arrested yet. The motive behind the murder is also not yet clear.
Another Hindu businessman was murdered on the same day.
This incident comes on the same day that another Hindu businessman and journalist was murdered in Jessore district, Bangladesh. Rana Pratap Bairagi (38), executive editor of the newspaper “BD Khabar,” who also owned an ice factory, was lured out of the factory by assailants, shot in the head, and later strangled to death.
Many Hindus have been targeted in the last 25 days.
Over the past 25 days, between December 2025 and January 2026, there have been a series of attacks on Hindu youth, businesspeople, and civilians. In many cases, these resulted in murder, while in others, they were seriously injured.
The major events are as follows:
- December 18: Dipu Chandra Das was beaten to death by a mob in Mymensingh on charges of blasphemy.
- December 25: Murder of Amrit Mandal.
- January 3: Khokon Chandra Das was stabbed and burnt alive in Shariatpur, later died during treatment.
- January 11: Hindu auto driver Samir Das was stabbed to death and his auto was looted in Chittagong.
Fear and insecurity among the Hindu community
These frequent incidents have deepened a climate of fear and insecurity among Bangladesh’s Hindu community. Human rights organizations and minority leaders say these incidents are part of a targeted wave of violence. The interim government, meanwhile, is treating these cases as isolated criminal incidents. Police investigations are ongoing, but concrete action and arrests have not yet been made in most cases.
