Amidst the ongoing violent repression and nationwide protests in Iran, the US has adopted a very tough stance. The US State Department has clearly warned Iran not to make the mistake of testing Trump. The statement issued by the State Department said that if the Iranian regime continues to use lethal force against the protesters, America will not sit as a mute spectator. The statement specifically said – “The Iranian regime should seriously consider the consequences of its actions and should not underestimate the resolve of America under the leadership of Trump.”
It is reported that protests are currently underway in more than 100 cities across Iran. People have taken to the streets to protest inflation, unemployment, economic hardship, and religious and social restrictions. To control the situation, the government has shut down internet and communication services, but despite this, the protests are becoming more violent. According to human rights organizations, a large number of civilians have been killed in firing and violent actions by security forces, while thousands have been arrested. The government is justifying the action by calling the protesters a foreign conspiracy and terrorist elements.
The US warning comes at a time when President Donald Trump has already indicated that the US will not hesitate to retaliate if peaceful protesters are killed in Iran. This warning is being taken more seriously following the recent US military action in Venezuela. Political analysts believe that Washington no longer wants to limit itself to mere rhetoric. Amid internet blackouts, growing mobs, and intensifying repression, the US is signaling that it is closely monitoring the situation and may take direct action if necessary.
