A massive pile of garbage collapsed at a waste segregation center in a Philippine city, burying workers there, killing one woman, injuring seven others, and leaving at least 27 others missing, police said on Friday. According to police, a large section of garbage and debris suddenly collapsed at a landfill site in Binaliv village, Cebu City, trapping people there.

Rescue workers have so far rescued eight people alive, and the search for those still trapped in the debris continues. Regional Police Director Brigadier General Roderick Maranon said that among those rescued was a female landfill worker who died on the way to the hospital. The remaining injured are reported to be in stable condition. Maranon said that preliminary police reports indicate that 27 people are still missing, and a search and rescue operation is underway.
Meanwhile, Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival said on Friday that at least 12 people had been rescued, while 38 were still missing. The reason for the discrepancy between the figures given by the police and the mayor was not immediately clear.
