A foreign media report has made a big and sensitive claim in the midst of nationwide protests that broke out due to the severe economic crisis in Iran. According to reports, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is considering plans to leave the country after alleged interference and threats from US President Donald Trump. The Times report, citing an alleged intelligence assessment, said the 86-year-old Khamenei had prepared a “back-up plan”. It has been claimed that if the situation worsens, he may leave Iran with about 20 of his close associates and family members.

The report also states that a possible refuge for Khamenei could be Russia, just as Syrian President Bashar al-Assad received Russian support. According to the report, due to limited options, Moscow is considered the safest place for them. However, there has been no official confirmation of these claims from the Iranian government or Khamenei’s office. Meanwhile, the situation in Iran has deteriorated rapidly. At least 15 people have been killed in violence during protests against economic poverty, inflation and unemployment. According to reports, demonstrations have taken place in more than 170 places in 25 of Iran’s 31 provinces and more than 580 people have been arrested.
Reacting to the protests, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has adopted a strict stance. He described the rioters as “riots” and said they would be dealt with strictly. This statement is considered to be his first public response after the violent protests. Experts say that growing US pressure, internal discontent and the economic crisis are pushing Iran towards a serious political turning point. However, claims of Khamenei leaving the country are currently unconfirmed and should be viewed with caution.
