South Africa has once again been rocked by violent violence. Unknown gunmen fired indiscriminately on Sunday in Bakersdal Township, located about 40 kilometers south-west of Johannesburg. At least 10 people were killed in this attack, while 10 others were seriously injured. According to the police, the attack took place near an illegal and unlicensed tavern. According to eyewitnesses, the attackers suddenly started firing bullets at people on the street. Many people were targeted without any provocation. Gauteng Province Police Spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridilli said that the process of identifying the dead is ongoing. He said that it was not yet clear what background the victim belonged to. The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals, where the condition of some remains critical.

Angle connected to gold mines?
Several large gold mines are located around the scene, but police have not yet clarified whether the attack is related to mining activities or criminal gangs. Neither the attackers have been identified and no one has been arrested so far.
Second mass shooting this month
It is significant that this is the second mass shooting in the month of December. Earlier on December 7, 11 people, including a three-year-old child, were killed in a shooting at a hostel in Saulsville Township near Pretoria. 14 people were injured in that attack. Police say the two incidents have one thing in common: the shootings took place around illegal liquor establishments. In South Africa, such locations have long been considered hotbeds of crime and violence.
