In a major accident near Pune, a bridge over the Indrayani river collapsed on Sunday, killing 6 tourists by drowning. The incident took place in Kundamala, which is a very popular tourist destination during the monsoon.
At the time of the accident, about 15 to 20 people were present on the bridge. As soon as the bridge broke, all the people fell into the fast flowing river below and were swept away. So far 8 people have been rescued safely. At the same time, two women are still trapped under the bridge. As soon as the information about the incident was received, the police, disaster relief force and NDRF team reached the spot and rescue work has been started.
The accident took place in Maval in Pune rural area. The area has been receiving heavy rainfall for the past two days, and the weather department has issued an ‘orange alert’ for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Locals say that the bridge was repaired 4-5 years ago, but concerns had been raised earlier about its strength. Despite this, many tourists were unaware of the danger.
