Trump’s comment on Pahalgam attack: “The conflict is old, India and Pakistan will resolve the dispute among themselves”

US President Donald Trump has said that tensions between India and Pakistan have always existed and the two countries will resolve them “somehow”. Trump made the remarks on Friday when asked about the heightened tensions between India and Pakistan in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed. Asked if he would talk to the leaders of the two countries, Trump said, “I’m very close to India and I’m very close to Pakistan, as you know.”

He told reporters on Air Force One en route to Rome that the fighting in Kashmir has been going on for a long time and what happened in Pahalgam was very bad. Trump said that the tension on the border has been going on for a long time but “they will resolve it one way or the other. I am sure… I know both the leaders. There is a lot of tension between Pakistan and India which has always been there.”

India on Wednesday announced a slew of tough measures against Pakistan, including declaring the military representative posted at the Pakistani High Commission as persona non grata, suspending the 1960 Indus Water Treaty and closing the Attari land-transit crossing with immediate effect in view of the cross-border links to the terror attack. In response, Pakistan on Thursday decided to close its airspace to all Indian airlines and suspend trade with India.
