Chandigarh: Applaud and criticism for Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh’s new song Patiala Peg goes side by side over social media.
Diljit Dosanjh’s supporters, mostly youngsters and teenagers, have given massive response to Patiala Peg song. Patiala Peg went viral on YouTube soon after it’s release and it’s views have crossed 500K mark in just two days.
But it’s not just the applaud that Patiala Peg has earned for Diljit Dosanjh, there is also bitter criticism of the singer as his ‘Patiala Peg’ tends to glorify alcoholism and liquor abuse.
Social media platforms such as “Sikh Voice” and “Sikh Siyasat” raised alarm after release of Patiala Peg.
The Sikh Voice released an audio response and questioned Diljit Dosanjh for glorifying alcoholism. The Sikh voice said that Punjabi society is already in evil grip of drugs and liquor abuse, but Punjabi singers are ‘misguiding’ the Punjabi youth through their songs.
A report by ‘Sikh Siyasat News’ (SSN) notes: “A number of videos shared on Diljit Dosanjh’s Facebook page show that the song had it’s impact on youth, including teenagers. An analysis of videos featuring youth, including young girls, singing “Patiala Pegg” shows that the viewers/ listeners have taken an impression that taking large glasses of liquor in as ‘positive’ gesture”.
PunjabUpFilms talked to certain social activists and analysts who opened that it was not merely an issue of glorification of consumption of liquor it amounts to ‘cultural pollution’.
“These singers are polluting our culture and lives of our youth. Youth tends to follow whatever is being served by these singers. Vulgarity screened on TV or other media is bound to have reflections in our society” said a representative of Istari Jagriti Manch (IJM). “The concerned sections must resist against this trend”, she added. Notably IJM is raising alarm against Punjabi singers who are promoting vulgarity and harming the morality of the society.
